Environmentalists to Use Blockchain to Clean Polluted River

The Philippines’ Pasig River Rehabilitation Council (PRRC) has partnered with environmentalists in an effort to preserve Pasig River. The partnership aims to use blockchain technology to launch projects targeting to clean the river.

In an interview with Cryptovest, Mariano Jose Diaz Villafuerte IV, CypherOdin and BOTcoin CEO, stated that the Pasig River will be a good first proof-of-concept (PoC) as it is one of the most polluted rivers in the country. This project will also be a good chance to show the capabilities of blockchain technology.

“We first came up with the idea of showcasing how blockchain technology can solve real-world problems and clean up the environment specifically, using Boracay Island as an example. However, the government shut the island down in April, so we looked at the Pasig River instead as the next most important body of water in the country,” Villafuerte said.

As part of the campaign, CypherOdin will be installing Internet of Things (IoT) devices in and around the river. These will be used to collect significant data such as information on water and tides. Furthermore, drones will also monitor the plastic waste using LIDAR technology.

To further maximize the effects of their efforts, a campaign will be held on surrounding communities to spread awareness on pollution and waste management. BOTcoin cryptocurrency will be given as incentives as the communities follow proper waste disposal in their area.
